To the west, there was a dream. The states had suffered through the years of war and the torment of a nation fighting within its own borders was devastating. The north fought for unity and the south fought for a way of life. But now the war was over and the young country had begun the healing process. Many had returned from the battle only to find that they had given so much for what no longer existed. Lovers and friends had changed and sensed change in those who were returning. Many stayed and began anew to rebuild the life of a long remembered past. Some could not stay.
Stony was a lean, tall man from southern Pennsylvania. His farm had been overrun by both the armies of the south and north.
